Typhoon turbine: Japanese engineer develops wind turbine to harness power from typhoon - TomoNews
TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons.
Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons.
The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction.
Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne.
The blades are c...

Vertical-axis Wind Turbines could Revolutionize Offshore Wind Power
The world's first offshore wind farm was installed in 1991 off the coast of Vindeby on the Danish island of Lolland. It included 11 turbines with a capacity of 450 kW each, and the project cost 10 million euros. At the time, offshore turbines were considered ludicrous by the electric power industry as they had to operate in salty conditions and have much less power than central power plants. The skepticism changed 6 years later as offshore wind powers produced more energy than land winds. The wind farm produced a total of 243 GWh over 25 years of operation and was decommissioned in 2017 for economic reasons. What has changed since then? Why are we still not making the most of offshore wind? And how can innovative vertical-axis wind turbines make a difference? What are the benefits of offsh...

The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces.
Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally.
"Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.”
According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years.

What are the benefits of offshore wind energy? The wind in the sea is stronger and more constant – it gives more energy on a stable basis. Wherein the wind speed increases the amount of energy non-linearly – you will get it twice as much if the wind starts blowing at a speed of not 20, but 25 km/h. An offshore windmill may operate for up to 50%–60% of the time, compared to only 35% along the coast and even less on the continent.

The first phase is complete of a plan to build the world's largest offshore wind farm near the Fukushima nuclear plant that was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
The first turbine has been delivered to the area and the facility is due to become operational in October.
It is part of plans by Fukushima Prefecture to ditch nuclear energy and move towards total reliance on renewable sources over the next 25 years.
By 2020 scores of giant turbines 200 metres high should produce twice as much power as the world's current biggest offshore windfarm at Greater Gabbard off the UK's Suffolk coast.
"First and foremost, we want to make this a symbol of Fukushima's recovery. Secondly, this floating wind farm concept is the ace up our sleeves for the next stage of renewable energy development," said Keisuke Murakami, Head of New and Renewable Energy at the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry.
There have been concerns about radioactive water leaking into the sea from Fukushima, and official accounts have given conflicting evidence over whether fish are safe to eat.
The disaster all but shut down Japan's nuclear industry, forcing the country to rely heavily on imported gas.
